Fish oil's impact on measures of heart health

Much literature suggests that a daily dosage of fish oil supplements can benefit your heart health. In a comprehensive meta-analysis of 68 studies, researchers assessed the effects of daily consumption of 3-4 grams of fish oil on triglyceride levels of more than 2,800 subjects. They made sure that each study lasted at least two weeks and was either parallel or crossover. On average, the studies lasted nine weeks and had 41 subjects. After analysis, researchers discovered that daily fish oil consumption resulted in a 25% decrease of triglycerides in subjects with normal triglyceride levels. Subjects with initially high levels of triglycerides experienced a 34% reduction after daily fish oil supplementation. Even though researchers were unsure about the mechanism by which fish oil supplements exert their effects, they concluded “it is clear that practical doses of n-3 fatty acids have a significant and probably clinically important effect on serum concentrations, especially in patients. They also noted that higher supplementation weights yielded greater reductions in levels of triglycerides.
